Everyday Motorcycle Essentials

Updated: Aug 7, 2018

Just like your perfect white T-shirt or the LBD, here are the motorcycle essentials you should definitely have in your closet. You can blend them into your daily wardrobe and layer them for different seasons. Regardless, these serve as the perfect primer for a day riding in the city.

Atwyld is a women’s motorcycle gear and apparel brand that creates versatile pieces for riders. The Convoy Armored Shirt is designed as a supporting piece to layer under jackets for an extra layer of protection. It’s a second skin, full zip long sleeve base layer with D3O® armor at the shoulders, elbows and back panel. It’s skin tight so I can wear almost any outerwear piece without sacrificing safety. Bonus, the armored pads are completely removable for easy washing and it packs down well for storage.

These black leggings fit close to the body and have armor in the knees and pockets for hip protectors. Made from Kevlar, they are super durable, warm and provide great protection while also transitioning well into street wear. Also, they have a tall version of the leggings, a great option for anyone over 5’8”. The company did a great job with customer service, communicating delivery details and helping me find the right size.

These are another good option, they’re sneakers but reinforced at the ankle, toe and heel for extra protection. They go over your ankles so are great for protecting you against wind and potential road rash. Also, waterproof lining, so you’ll stay dry if you find yourself in the rain!

If you’re wearing nicer shoes while riding though, check out these boot covers. They will prevent scuffs and protect your boots when shifting gears. I haven't tested any of these but have heard good reviews.

Modern function meets vintage form with this helmet. The Bitwell Gringo is a full-face helmet that meets DOT safety standards, has diamond-stitched removable pads and an eyeport that fits most goggles, as well as snaps for any universal 3-snap shield. The shape of the helmet fits my head well, the pads are soft and the color options are refined and fun. The fit is snug but allows me to still wear my sunglasses. My silver helmet also looks like a disco ball which delights children and adults alike as I drive by.
